1. Causal question and dataset

Identify a causal question including the treatment and outcome variables, and dataset that you will use for your project. The dataset should be publicly available with a link (make sure you can download it!), and you should provide a brief description of the data and how it relates to your causal question.

2. Prior knowledge: literature search

Find \(2n\) papers, where \(n\) is the number of group members, that pertain to your causal question and dataset – for example, a group of 2 students should list 4 papers. For each paper, provide a citation and a brief (1-2 sentences) description of the paper’s relevance to your causal question. The relevance can be broad, such as providing background information of the domain under study or prior estimates of causal effects in similar contexts. If you are replicating an existing study, you should include the original study in your literature search.

Tip

You do not have to fully read the papers for the initial proposal – instead, focus on finding papers that are relevant to your causal question and dataset by reading the abstract and/or the first few paragraphs of the introduction.

3. Study design and project deliverables

Briefly describe your group’s plan for approaching the project. Your description should include the following:

1. What causal study design do you tentatively plan on using to address your causal question? E.g., randomized experiment, observational study, or quasi-experiment

2. How will work be divided among group members?

3. Which unique deliverables do you tentatively plan on completing? (Remember: groups of 1-2 select one deliverable; groups of 3 select two deliverables)

4. How do these deliverables connect to your dataset and causal question?

How to submit

The Gradescope assignment for the proposal allows for group submissions. Please submit a single .ipynb file for your group, and make sure to include all members in the submission.
